Lillith

The smell of blueberries and cinnamon pulls me out of the deepest sleep I’ve ever had.

I roll onto my side with a groan to get away from the haze of morning sunlight streaming through the windows. The smell only grows stronger, and when I slit one eye open, I see a table set next to my bed.

Memories of yesterday surge through me in a warm rush, tingling from the tips of my fingers to the pit of my belly. The car crash; Fallon saving me; waking up here at this Villain fortress somewhere in the California canyons; the video of Ari trying to kill me.

And being entwined with Fallon in Scarlet’s dreamscape.

That memory beats most strongly as I sit up, the silk sheets pooling in my lap. A small table has been unfolded next to my bed, set with a vase holding a single purple lily so dark it’s almost black. A plate of scones sits next to it, along with a bowl of cream and jam, and a silver coffee pot steaming out the neck over a porcelain cup. A small paper container of ibuprofen is there as well.

I grin, biting my lip, and reach for the coffee pot.

There’s a note folded next to it with my name scrawled in delicate cursive.

Lillith.

I pluck it from the table and spread it open.

I didn’t want to wake you. Please take as much time as you need. Persephone can wait—

The mention of Persephone jolts through me, equal parts fear and thrill.

—and you need to heal. When you’re ready, call Watcher, and he’ll find me.

It’s signed, simply, Fallon.

I refold the note and hold it to my lips, grinning like a fool. How could one note send me reeling? And this breakfast spread, the gorgeous flower—

My joy dims.

I look at the note again.

When you’re ready, call Watcher, and he’ll find me.

Ready to face Persephone? Ready to discuss mine and Fallon’s plans for taking down Ari again?

I won’t be ready.

Not until I check that video of Ari trying to kill me.

But first ...

I grab a scone, and coffee, and cream, and fall back into the pillows, letting myself enjoy this utterly indulgent wake-up.
